St Ives
What is it?The St Ives Judo Course is an annual celebration of judo held at the The course has been running for over 30 years and attracts a large number of judoka from around the country. The course always runs over the Easter Weekend each year. Many people combine the weekend with some holiday and make an occasion of the course. The course is attended by a large mix of grades, but you must be graded at yellow belt or higher to attend. What happens?Judoka gather at the Guildhall on Good Friday early in the morning. You sign in, and, if you haven’t paid in advance, then you can pay on the day. Throughout the Friday and Saturday there are a variety of sessions for junior and senior judoka, usually each will last for 1 or 2 hours and is run by guest instructors such as former Olympic or Commonwealth champions, or senior Dan grades. Between sessions there is usually a break of an hour or two so this means that you can wander down into the centre of St Ives and enjoy the beach , seagulls, promenade or shops. On the Easter Sunday a grading takes place, so any judoka who wish to grade can enter. Grading is to the BJC national syllabus, not the St Albans syllabus, although anyone who has graded on the St Albans syllabus should have no difficulty grading at St Ives – contest wins permitting. At the same time as the the other judo there are often courses for referees and table officials, and kata instruction. There is usually a very pleasant sports massage area too! On the Sunday evening there is a course party at the St Ives Rugby Club which involves lots of dancing and usually a little drinking.
